Skills Link
The New Horizons Skills Link Program is a four month program designed to give participating youth the skills needed to gain meaningful employment. Youth taking part in this program are learning valuable employability skills and gaining hands-on experience through a number of workshops, community involvement projects, and a three week work experience placement.
Personal Development Workshops - Participating youth will develop personal goals and gain a better sense of self through the following workshops: Colour Spectrums, Communication, Conflict Resolution, Sports and Fitness and Teambuilding.
Cultural Workshops - Youth will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of cultural activities including the following: Ice Fishing, Carving, Trapping, Story Telling and Traditional Medicines. The Skills Link Participants will be staying at Gwich'in Territorial Park this May for an on the land trip, where they will participate in traditional activities including tanning, hunting,
Skill Enhancement Workshops - Skills acquired through these workshops will prepare participants with the necessary skills, knowledge and confidence to enter and maintain a job within the workforce. Workshops will include: Job Searching, Resume and Cover Letter Writing, Rights and Responsibilities, First Aid/CPR Training, WHMIS, Driver's License Training, Computer and Website Design, Developing Literacy and Money Management.
Community Involvement Projects - Program participants will take part in four community involvment projects. These projects will give participants hands on experience, as well as an opportunity to develop additional skills and a sense of pride in giving back to their community. Moreover, participants will have the opportunity to develop the following skills: Planning and organizing, Problem Solving Skills, Cooking, Landscaping and Carpentry.
