         <title>Young Women&apos;s Empowerment Program</title>
         <description><![CDATA[  <p style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: 150%" class="MsoBodyText"><span>The Young Women&rsquo;s Empowerment Program began as a joint venture between the Inuvik Victims Services and the Inuvik Youth Centre, with funding provided by Community Justice Special Projects Fund.<span>&nbsp; </span><span />Fourteen girls and four leaders spent three days camping at Gwich'in park, learning how for to make fires, set up tents, paddle canoes for the first time, and generally having a great time.&nbsp; The trip helped to empower, build on the land skills and positive role modelling for fourteen young women in Inuvik.<span>&nbsp;</span></span></p><p style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; line-height: 150%" class="MsoBodyText">&nbsp;</p>  ]]></description>

         <title>Power Camp National 2007 Network Retreat</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>This winter IYC staff and volunteers travelled to Montreal with five young women from Inuvik, Fort McPherson and Tuktoyaktuk.&nbsp; We attended the Annual Power Camp National Retreat, where the girls were able to:<br /></p><ul><li>Network</li><li>Explore collaboration</li><li>Reflect and build new skills</li><li>Plan for the next Day of Action</li><li>Participate in the development of new collaborative projects</li><li>Network &amp; connect with girls programs leaders and participants across the country</li><li>Share success stories &amp; action strategies for girls programs</li><li>Develop and contribute to the advancement of specific projects, for example, Northern Lights</li><li>Relax, create &amp; celebrate!</li></ul><p>Out of this retreat, the girls began to collaborate on Northern Lights, a project that will reflect and address the issues that are pertinent to young women in the North.&nbsp; </p><p>&nbsp;A big THANK YOU to Nancy McInnes and Helen Gruben for volunteering their time and continually offering their insights and support throughout the journey.&nbsp; <br /></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>EMPLOYMENT</p><p>Intern Opportunity<br /><br />Location:&nbsp; Inuvik, NT<br /><br />The Inuvik Youth Centre Society is currently looking for an intern, to stay a minimum of four months.&nbsp;&nbsp;<br /> </p><p>DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:<br /><br />The successful candidate will work closely with the centre program coordinators and director and will assist in the implementation of programs including a nutrition and exercise program, jewellery making, girls&rsquo; night, movie night and sports night. <br /><br />Specific areas of responsibility include:<br /><br />1) Working with Youth<br />Working with youth between 6 and 18 years of age for three evening shifts<br /><br />2) Program Coordination<br />Preparing monthly program calendars for distribution throughout the community<br />Developing and delivering programs for youth 6-12 and 13-18<br />Facilitating and coordinating special events related to programming<br /><br />3) Budgeting<br />Purchasing supplies related to programs<br />Ensure project expenses and income are managed according to budgets<br /><br />4) Human Resources<br />Co-facilitating monthly staff meetings<br /><br />5) Maintenance<br />Ensuring the safe and secure maintenance of the facilities.<br /><br />6) Administration<br />Respond to phone and email inquiries in a timely and professional manner<br />File and record documents in an accurate and efficient manner<br /><br />7) Fundraising<br />Develop and coordinate alternative means of fundraising<br /><br />QUALIFICATIONS<br /><br />Preference will be given to candidates who have:<br /><br />Experience working with Aboriginal youth as well as an extensive understanding of youth-related issues;<br />University degree and/or experience in working with youth at-risk;<br />Sound knowledge of MS Office applications; Strong oral and written communication skills; <br />Proven experience working within budgets; <br />Knowledge of Quickbooks, Microsoft Publisher and Excel considered an asset;<br />Additional qualifications Standard First Aid and CPR; Suicide prevention; CPI training; <br /><br />QUALITIES<br /><br />The youth centre is looking for:<br /><br />Reliable, flexible staff members who enjoy taking initiative and are able to work as part of a team &nbsp;<br />Excellent facilitation, communication, leadership, organization and co-ordination skills; ability to manage a team and resolve conflicts; open-mindedness and respect; time and stress management skills.<br /><br />TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT<br /><br />Compensation:&nbsp; Air fare to Inuvik, living stipend<br />Hours: Monday through Friday (flexible)<br /><br />APPLICATION PROCEDURE<br /><br />Applications are rolling.&nbsp; Your application should include the following:<br />1.          <title>Skills Link</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>The <strong><em>New Horizons Skills Link Program</em></strong> is a four month program designed to give participating youth the skills needed to gain meaningful employment.&nbsp; Youth taking part in this program are learning valuable employability skills and gaining hands-on experience through a number of workshops, community involvement projects, and a three week work experience placement.</p><p><strong>Personal Development Workshops</strong> - Participating youth will develop personal goals and gain a better sense of self through the following workshops:&nbsp; Colour Spectrums, Communication, Conflict Resolution, Sports and Fitness and Teambuilding.</p><p><strong>Cultural Workshops</strong> - Youth will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of cultural activities including the following:&nbsp; Ice Fishing, Carving, Trapping, Story Telling and Traditional Medicines.&nbsp; The Skills Link Participants will be staying at Gwich'in Territorial Park this May for an on the land trip, where they will participate in traditional activities including tanning, hunting, </p><p><strong>Skill Enhancement Workshops</strong> - Skills acquired through these workshops will prepare participants with the necessary skills,&nbsp;knowledge and confidence to enter&nbsp;and maintain a job within the workforce.&nbsp; Workshops&nbsp;will include:&nbsp; Job Searching, Resume and&nbsp;Cover Letter&nbsp;Writing, Rights and Responsibilities, First&nbsp;Aid/CPR Training, WHMIS, Driver's License Training,&nbsp;Computer and Website&nbsp;Design, Developing Literacy and Money Management.&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Community Involvement Projects</strong> - Program participants will take part in four community involvment projects.&nbsp; These projects will give participants hands on experience, as well as an opportunity to develop additional skills&nbsp;and a sense&nbsp;of pride in giving back to their community.&nbsp; Moreover,&nbsp; participants will have the opportunity&nbsp;to develop the following skills:&nbsp; Planning and organizing, Problem Solving Skills, Cooking, Landscaping and Carpentry.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><br />&nbsp;</p>]]></description>

         <title>Swimming Lessons</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Inuvik Youth Centre currently offers free swim lessons for youth between the ages of six and thirteen at the Inuvik Family Centre.&nbsp; Lessons are from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for youth unable to go into the deep end and from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for youth already able to swim in the deep end.&nbsp; With friendly, skilled instructor, Lindsay Wood, you can learn to swim one week at a time.&nbsp; Have fun!</p>]]></description>

(July 2007)</em></p><p>The <strong><em>Young Entrepreneurs</em></strong> program is built around a core group of young girls aged 6 to 12 who work closely with facilitators from the youth centre and the larger community to develop their handicraft and marketing skills.</p><p>The group meets every Thursday evening to learn how to make traditional and contemporary jewelry.&nbsp; The workshops with the elders, in particular, provide opportunities for cultural learning and sharing, and thus help to strengthen and re-inforce northern Aboriginal beading traditions amongst participating youth.&nbsp; The girls then get to market their goods in the community.&nbsp; </p><p>These young business woman have been hard at work selling their proceeds during the SAMS Christmas&nbsp;Craft sale where the girls raised $240.&nbsp; When asked what they would like to do with the proceeds, they decided that they would donate $100 to&nbsp;Turning Point, Inuvik's&nbsp;homeless&nbsp;shelter.&nbsp; Since the&nbsp;craft sale, the girls&nbsp;organized a sale in time&nbsp;for Valentine's Day and more recently at the 50th Anniversary Muskrat Jamboree.&nbsp;&nbsp;A number of lovely items are also currently on display at Moe's Stationary and Gift Store right here in Inuvik.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;<img height="131" hspace="1" src="http://inuvikyouthcentre.org/group2website.jpg" width="238" align="left" vspace="1" border="1" /></p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><em>The girls display their work at the SAMS craft sale (November 2006).</em>&nbsp;</p>]]></description>

         <title>Get Involved</title>
         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Inuvik Youth Centre relies on, and needs, the support of all members of the community to&nbsp; continue to make the centre a special, positive place for the youth of Inuvik.&nbsp; </p><p>The opportunities for involvement are endless!&nbsp; Here are our &quot;top 5 ways&quot; to get involved:<br /><br /><em>1) volunteer&nbsp; </em><br />This past year, our ski program, jewelry program and craft night were all 100% volunteer-run.&nbsp; If you'd like to help make one of our programs happen, or if you have an idea for another project, we're all ears!<br /><br /><em>2) donate things</em><br />The youth centre is currently looking for<strong> secure cupboards, healthy snacks</strong> or anything that can be used as <strong>small prizes</strong> for youth activities.&nbsp; If you have any&nbsp;of these, and are looking to give them away to a worthy cause, we would certainly welcome them.<br /><br /><em>3) become a donor</em><br />The youth centre relies on the generosity of private donors, government and business sources to fund the wide range of services and programs we offer.&nbsp; Each contribution to the centre goes a long way towards making a positive difference for Inuvik's youth.&nbsp; The Inuvik Youth Centre is able to issue charitable receipts for any amount over $20.00</p><p><em>4) join the board</em><br />We are always looking for energetic, community-minded people to join the IYC board.&nbsp; We are currently looking for a&nbsp;new <strong>Chair</strong> of the board.&nbsp; <br /><br /><em>5) come visit us!</em><br />Stop by and visit the youth centre.&nbsp; We're located at 102 Mackenzie, and would welcome the opportunity to show you around the place.&nbsp; Our young&nbsp;pool aficionados are ready eager to play with you! <br /><br />email info@inuvikyouthcentre.org for more information the above.&nbsp; Let's work together to make this the best youth centre it can be for the youth of Inuvik!</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>To send a donation, please make the cheque out to The Inuvik Youth Centre Society and send to the youth centre.
