Inuvik Youth Centre Board

The Inuvik Youth Centre would like to thank Martin Landry for his four year term as Chair of the Board.  Martin has been instrumental in making the Inuvik Youth Centre a thriving, positive space for the youth of Inuvik.

The Inuvik Youth Centre is governed by a voluntary board, which meets on a monthly basis.  The members of our board are:

CHAIR, Rob Smith

Rob Smith has been an active volunteer for the Inuvik Youth Centre  for years.  He sits on numerous local boards, and is supervisor for the Inuvik Family Centre.  We are delighted that he is assumign the position of chair. 

VICE CHAIR, Nathan Millar 

Nathan Millar is a fisheries biologist and outdoor enthusiast. He is a ski instructor for the Jackrabbits cross-country program.

 

 

 


 

SECRETARY, Melanie Swain

 

Melanie is currently employed as the Inuvik area Economic Development Officer.  In 2003, she graduated from Memorial University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.  She recently became involved in delivering the Junior Achievement program in the local grade 5 and 9 classes.

 

 


 

 

 

MEMBERS

 

Bobbie-Jo Greenland is employed with the Gwich'in Renewable Resource Board.  She was born in Inuvik but considers  Aklavik to be her home. Bobbie-Jo completed highschool in Inuvik, obtained a College Diploma in management studies at Yukon College in Whitehorse, and enrolled into the First Nations University of Canada in Regina where she completed three years towards a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Health. She recently returned from Denmark spending six-months on the Circumpolar Young Leaders Program. 

 

 

Hazel Harrison manages student services for the Aurora location of Aurora College.  She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology, and is adament about providing opportunities for youth in the North. 

Alana Mero recently joined the board. She brings with her considerable insight and enthusiasm for community development.

Simon Routh is a researcher with the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation. He has worked with organizations such as the Autism Society of Ontario and the Disabled Sailing Association of Ontario, and came to Inuvik in 2004 as a volunteer teacher with the Frontiers Foundation Northern Education Project 

 

 

 

 

Dylan Spencer is a land planner for the Gwich'in Tribal Council.  He holds a master's degree in experiential education.  One of the star volunteers for the BP Environment Club, we are honoured to have DYlan on board.

 

Amy Thompson is a Gwich’in beneficiary and was born in Inuvik. She grew up in Halifax NS, where she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in biology from MSVU. She returned to Inuvik in January 2006 to work as a biologist for the Gwich’in Renewable Resource Board (GRRB). Amy has given presentations to youth throughout the Gwich’in Settlement Area (GSA) about her work and promoting education to youth. She has been involved with the youth centre since 2006.

 

James Thorbourne is pleased to begin membership on the IYC board.  James is president of the Inuvialut Development Corporation, and brings to the board his business savvy, passion for the outdoors and aquatics, and a keen interest in youth develpment.
